How to Register Phone with PTA: DIRBS Taxes & Process in 2026

Complete step-by-step guide to register imported smartphones with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), calculate custom duties, and use the DIRBS portal.

Understanding PTA Device Registration (DIRBS)

All mobile devices imported into Pakistan must be registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) under the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS). If you bring a phone from abroad, or purchase an unregistered device locally, you have 60 days from your arrival date to register it before the device is blocked from accessing cellular networks in Pakistan.

Step-by-Step Mobile Registration Process

There are three primary methods to register your phone with PTA:

Method 1: Via USSD Code (*8484#)

This is the easiest offline method available to anyone with a local SIM card:

  1. Dial *8484# on your phone.
  2. Select Option 1: Register Device.
  3. Select your status: Pakistani (Local/International Traveller) or Foreigner.
  4. Choose the registration type: Passport-based (one free/discounted registration per year) or CNIC-based (standard duties).
  5. Enter your passport number or CNIC when prompted.
  6. Enter the IMEI number(s) of your phone (dial *#06# to find them).
  7. Confirm details to receive a unique transaction ID and a PSID (Payment System Identifier) code via SMS.

Method 2: Online via PTA DIRBS Portal

  1. Visit the official PTA portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
  2. Create an account using your email and phone number.
  3. Fill out the application form with your Passport/CNIC and device IMEIs.
  4. Submit the request to generate a PSID code for tax payment.

How to Pay the PTA Tax PSID

Once your PSID is generated, you can pay the tax within 30 days through:

  • Mobile Banking / Internet Banking: Under Bill Payments -> 1Bill -> Invoice/PTA options.
  • ATMs: Select 1Bill/PTA option and enter your 17-digit PSID.
  • Mobile Wallets: Easypaisa, JazzCash, or Nayapay apps.
  • Commercial Bank Branches: Visit any commercial bank counter and pay by cash.

Your phone will automatically get activated on all mobile networks within 24 hours after the payment is verified.

Filer vs Non-Filer Tax Context

Taxes on mobile phones are calculated based on the commercial value of the device, categorized into specific custom slabs. Being an FBR Active Taxpayer (Filer) significantly reduces the regulatory and sales tax levies compared to being a Non-Filer. Passport-based registration also offers a discounted duty structure.
