Choosing Your Fitrana Standard
Islamic law allows you to pay Fitrana based on the local market value of various staple foods. The choice of which scale to use should reflect your lifestyle and financial capacity.
The Scales
- Wheat (Rs. 300): The minimum mandatory amount for average income earners.
- Barley (Rs. 600): For middle-income households.
- Dates (Rs. 2,400) or Raisins (Rs. 4,400): Highly recommended for upper-middle and wealthy households. Paying according to your actual financial standing maximizes the reward and helps the poor more effectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sadaqah al-Fitr (Fitrana) is mandatory for every Muslim who has wealth equal to or beyond the Nisab of Zakat. The head of the household usually pays on behalf of their dependents, including children.
It must be paid during the month of Ramadan, ideally before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer, so that those in need can also celebrate Eid.
Fidya is a religious donation made when a person cannot fast in Ramadan due to chronic illness, old age, or a valid reason, and is unable to make up the fasts later. It is equal to the cost of feeding one poor person for two meals (equivalent to one Fitrana rate).
